Define globalization, outsourcing, and virtual teams

*Professor these are Shawns' Q&A below.*
1. Define globalization, outsourcing, and virtual teams and describe how these trends are changing IT project management.
Globalization is the process of companies integrating and growing on a global scale. Outsourcing is the act of contracting a third-party business to do a specific staff normally done in house. Virtual teams are teams that work together, but have little to no physical interaction, but instead use electronic communication.
Because of these trends businesses can now spend more money on new projects and ideas instead of office space and supplies since the employees provide their own.

  1. A good example, but it ignores globalization. An example of how globalization affects IT project management might be a system that would have to be used in branches in multiple countries. The system would not only have to be translated to each country's native language, but would also probably have to have its interface redesigned for each one as well to reflect cultural differences.

  2. I agree with the both of you. IBM has been practicing this for years. With everything being electronic and social media explodiing it only makes sense. Having good communication with different cultures is important and in my opinion working virtual is not for everyone. I think there needs to be options.
