3. Briefly describe the strategic planning process; including the SWOT analysis. Which method do you think businesses use most
when identifying IT project? Why?
The strategic planning process is the process of determining the long term objectives of a project such as:
"What are we doing? "
"Who are we doing it for?"
"Will it be successful?"
There
are many different methods for this process, like SWOT analysis. SWOT
focuses on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of a
project.
True as far as it goes, but the question also asks which method businesses use most to choose an IT project. I found five such methods which are:
ReplyDeleteFocusing on broad educational needs
Categorizing IT projects
Perfoming net present value calculations or similar financial analyses
Using a weighted scoring model
Implementing a balanced scorecard
The book says that these methods are used in combination, but if any one of them was more prevalent than the others I think that it would be the financial analysis method particularly in regards to the net present value.
I believe using a SWOT along with the planning stages would work wonders. This is when you marry IT's strategic plan along with the companies overall plan. It's good to have outside input and vice versa.
